Questions, answered
What Calliope does, what it deliberately won't, and how it stays out of your way.
-
Does Calliope write my prose for me? +
- No — and that's the point. Calliope never generates, drafts, expands, or rewrites your prose. It's an AI companion that researches beside you, checks your story for consistency, and helps you think through the work. The words on the page are always yours.
-
How is Calliope different from just using ChatGPT or Claude? +
- Calliope is AI inside a real, distraction-free editor, with your story's canon as context — and it deliberately won't write the scene for you. ChatGPT and Claude will happily ghostwrite; Calliope is built to help you think, not type. You can even connect your own ChatGPT or Claude to Calliope over MCP.
-
If it doesn't write, what does the AI actually do? +
- It researches without making you leave the page, holds your canon (characters, facts, locations), flags where your own writing drifts from that canon, and talks a scene through with you. Augmentation, not generation.
-
How does consistency checking work? +
- Calliope builds a canon from your own text — characters and their aliases, locations, established facts — and flags where your prose drifts from it: a renamed character, a date that no longer lines up, a fact you contradicted. You decide what's canon; nothing is changed behind your back.
-
Is my writing private? +
- Until you sign in, your writing stays in your browser and is never sent to our servers. After you sign in to save it, it's stored to your private account. Either way, we're an augmentation tool, not a training pipeline.
-
How much does Calliope cost? +
- Writing is free. AI actions run on credits you buy — one-time packs of €10, €50, or €100, pay only for what you use. An optional €12/month (or €99/year) subscription adds a monthly AI allowance and unlocks write access for AI clients you connect over MCP. See the pricing page.
-
Can I use my own ChatGPT or Claude? +
- You can connect an AI client — Claude Desktop, Cursor, and others — to your manuscript over MCP for free to read it. A subscription (€12/month or €99/year) unlocks write access for those clients and includes a monthly AI allowance. Calliope's own AI features always run on Calliope's built-in models, paid from credits or your allowance.
-
Can I export a finished manuscript? +
- Yes. Calliope exports your whole book for free — to Markdown, a native Google Doc, DOCX (standard manuscript format), EPUB (for KDP, Apple Books, and Kobo), and a typeset PDF that respects your chosen book size. Markdown works even without an account; the rest are one click once you sign in.
-
Can I connect Claude or Cursor to Calliope? +
- Yes. Calliope exposes your manuscript to AI clients like Claude Desktop and Cursor over MCP. Connecting and reading are free; a subscription unlocks write access so a client can edit your structure, annotations, and Map — never your prose. There is no prose-write tool over MCP, by design.
-
Can I start writing without an account? +
- Yes. Open Calliope and the editor is right there — no signup, no card. Your writing stays in your browser until you sign in (with Google) to save it. The whole editor and your Map work with no account and no AI spend.
-
Does Calliope have a story bible or character database? +
- Yes — it's called the Map. It holds your canon: characters, locations, and facts, with aliases and attributes you own. Calliope can detect entities from your prose (you approve them) and find duplicates. Unlike a story bible built to feed a ghostwriter, the Map exists to keep your own writing consistent.
The writing is yours. Keep it that way.
Calliope is the AI companion for writers who want help thinking — not typing.
